Historical Record

Provenance & Service

Commissioned by Robert Mallet during the Crimean War, this 36-inch (914 mm) mortar was built in sections so it could be transported and assembled near a target. The war ended before it was completed in 1857. Two were made; one survives at Fort Nelson in Hampshire, the other at the Royal Artillery Museum.
